The positive power of flowers

The positive power of flowers

We all need something to get us through lockdown part two.

For some, it will be the hope that a new vaccine can bring back normality more swiftly than we thought.

For others, it will be taking comfort in family and loved ones nearby.

I’m certainly relieved walks with a friend are allowed this month.

But this time round, it’s flowers that are playing the biggest part in keeping me going.

Back in the Spring, the beautiful sunshine drew me out into the garden. And the buzz of nature all around - from birds singing in the trees, to planting herbs and tomatoes, as well as my prized dahlias, gave me the boost of hope and positivity I really needed.

Now, with grey and rainy November days looming ahead, I’m looking at colourful indoor petals to give me a lift.

There are plenty of brilliant ready-to-order boxes out there and, of course, local florists and the good old supermarket have buckets of fabulous flowers.

During 2020 I’ve had deliveries from Bloom & Wild, Freddie’s Flowers and Appleyard Flowers and each cardboard box left on my doorstep has filled me with delight.

I can forget about the troubles in the wider world and just for a little while, as I arrange them into a vase, I’m transported and captivated by the visual feast in front of me.

When we’re spending so much time at home, these beautiful blooms remind me of the wonder of the world - just waiting to be explored once lockdown is over again.

I’m currently surrounded by deep pink oriental lily buds just waiting to spring open. I have paler pink LA lilies too, peeking out alongside delicate spiky purple thistles.

If I need a bit of zest, I squeeze branches of eucalyptus to inhale their refreshing scent and each morning I look to see if the vibrant purple iris’ are getting ready to unfurl.

A radiant bunch delivered last week from Freddie’s Flowers, brightens the corner of our dining room.

Flashes of red, gold and sparks of yellow and rich pink petals make me smile throughout the day.

Bursting with life and vibrancy - these flowers do more than make my home look pretty, they keep hope in my heart that better times lie ahead.
