How a life is measured
I've spent the last few days tucked up in a wonderful winter writing workshop and today's New Year's Eve task has been to consider how a life is measured.
My poem certainly isn’t one of my most elegant or refined creations but I no longer believe things have to be perfectly polished to share.
I hope as you look back on 2023, you can move away from traditional markers of success or failure and perhaps see your life in a different way. Happy New Year's Eve!
How a life is measured
By EK Luther
If you must put a figure on it
Count the hearts a life has touched.
If you want to give a weight to it
Measure the stones of sorrow lifted.
For those who box things up with a label
Mark a life with the most precious lessons learned.
To know part if its length, not just years
Measure the minutes of laughter.
Its depth can be counted
In moments of meditation and spiritual endeavour.
A life's height is not found in ambition or career ladder rungs climbed
But through collected moments of kindness and forgiveness.
The final measurement returns to the heart -
How much love have you lavished throughout your precious, shining life?
